About Afshan B. Hameed, MD

Dr. Afshan Hameed is a board-certified UCI Health cardiologist and maternal-fetal medicine specialist. She is a nationally recognized expert who co-authored the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' inter-conception care guidelines for women with hypertension to improve post-partum care and follow up.

Her clinical interests include heart disease in pregnancy, fetal echocardiography, preeclampsia and anticoagulation in pregnancy

Hameed received her medical degree from King Edward Medical University in Lahore, Pakistan, followed by residencies in internal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, where she also completed a fellowship in cardiology.

Her research focus is on maternal cardiac disease, anticoagulation in pregnancy and improving maternal morbidity and mortality. She maintains current funding for four active research projects examining cardiac disease and its relationship to pregnancy, with an emphasis on heart failure, valvular disease and anticoagulation in pregnancy. Her goal is to eliminate preventable causes of maternal morbidity and mortality.

Hameed serves on the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review Advisory Committee (PAMR), which reviews all cases of maternal mortality to identify gaps in care for quality improvement opportunities. She also helped develop the cardiovascular and venous thromboembolism toolkits published by CMQCC. She also served on the American College of Gynecology's Presidential Task Force for the publication of its 2019 Practice Bulletin on Heart Disease in Pregnancy.

She currently is developing the Obstetrics Basic Life Support curriculum to integrate into the American Heart Association Life Support Program and serves on the writing committee for Heart Rhythm Society’s “Arrhythmias in Pregnancy Guidelines” and the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine's Quality and Patient Safety Committee.
