iBegin Geocoder Launched

Geocoding (converting a physical address to GPS coordinates) is one of those under-belly elements of local that doesn’t get mentioned often. And most local startups completely ignore it - local queries are all handled on the premise of ZIP codes.

I’m very happy that we’ve had full geocoding support (Canada + US) since day one. Not only simple address translation (eg ‘18 Yorkville Avenue, Toronto, ON’) but also street intersections and reverse geocoding (converting physical address to GPS coordinates.). We use reverse geocoding to mention the major intersection near a business.

So after 16 months of usage, and prepping for general release, we have finally unleashed our geocoding service to the public: iBegin Geocoder.

Right now anyone can do 100 geocoding transactions per day for free (we are looking into upping this a bit). Commercial usage is only 1 cent per transaction, and we offer a full enterprise server option for those that want the geocoding to be local to their services.

The documentation is quite simple - if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Wolley Segap would be VERY proud…and excited for the future of his iNdusTRy…now that he has iBegin Geocoder.

iBegin Geocoder is JUST the very beginning of unlocking the localized power of the enigma, inside the riddle, at the center of the maze, that has been shrouded in mystery of (Y-P) search. You have delivered me the long sought tools I have needed, after my own 32-year iNdusTRy sales odyssey. Thank you!

    Best regards,

I hope this wasn’t supposed to be some big announcement Ahmed because it seems like this is a waste of time. No one will pay for more than 100 if they can use 50,000 from Google and use it for more countries and I know you already know this, I’m just saying it in case someone else doesn’t.

It is a big announcement :)

I think you are missing the bigger picture Sandra. What Google provides is a free service. Four things:

    1. For iBegin Source we have geocoded over 50 million unique entries. 50,000,000 / 50,000 = 1000 days.

    2. Google’s limit is not really 50,000 - it is one every 1.728 seconds (86400 seconds / 50000). If you want to geocode anything within 2 seconds, you will be rejected.

    3. We provide reverse geocoding, and also nearest intersection/major intersection information.

    4. Enterprise server. When doing a geocode to Google, you still need to connect and call their servers. That is roughly 0.5-1.0 seconds right there. With the enterprise server solution, the time is cut down. Drastically.

For a lot of people, Google’s service is fantastic. For people that need true commercial capabilities, that is what we are here for.

    Ahmed,

Whilst I’m sure your system is very capable - Google Maps API is significantly more cost effective for anything but extreme cases. 50,000 requests is per day, and you will not be blocked if you exceed more than 1 every 2 seconds. In fact, I send it quite a few at once - it handles them almost instantly. Yes, if you need enterprise level then getting a local system is far superior, but otherwise 50,000 Geocode requests per day is absolutely huge - and that is a ‘reserved’ amount, according to Google!

    Cheers!

The Google Groups sites specifically mention the 1.72 second limit - perhaps your first 10 might not do that, but after that it does happen. Trust me, I’ve had it happen to me :)

Furthermore, the role of reverse geocoding also comes into play.

Google/Yahoo Geocoding is more cost effective yes. But if you want to make sure you can geocode no matter how popular your site is - well, you need to make that decision yourself :)
