Major Intersections

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

Each listing now tells you the closest major intersection. Now you know how to get to my favorite pizza joint and where I go to whack golf balls.

Please note that the data may be slightly off for certain listings (it tends to happen when roads change names eg University->Avenue, College->Carlton, etc). We are working on fixing any last remaining little bugs.

iBegin Update: Miscellanea Version

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Got an interesting email recently:
I found your site from a wrong phone number. It’s great and very popular by the number of phone calls that I have been getting.

I kept getting calls asking if I was the meat store. I told the caller that they the wrong number and finally I asked where they got the number and they said on the internet at ibegin.com

So I went to the site and typed my number into the search engine
and this page came up:

http://toronto.ibegin.com/search.php?q=416-XXX-7462

It is indeed my number but I don’t own a meet store on bloor.
Nosso Talho 1042 Bloor St. W.
(416) XXX-7462

Perhaps you can change this number to the correct one? I don’t know it but I have been getting a lot of calls and I assume that the real meat store will want those customers.
(Incorrect phone number removed, updated since then.) What made me glad was that this is basically proof that the site is working - there were enough people (incorrectly) calling the number of a meat shop that the person finally had to contact us. The quicker small businesses appreciate how the internet can send them customers, the better for everyone :)

We will be adding ‘nearest major intersection’ to the site very soon. Ideally sometime today.

Ottawa is coming along well. The site design has been tweaked, with most notably two input boxes instead of one. I myself am a big fan of one, but the masses have spoken on this one.

iBegin continues to grow. We had a new high in unique visitors yesterday (for Toronto specifically).

Lastly, the site has been suffering from slowdowns. We have unfortunately still not moved to the new servers, but we are hoping to do that very very soon.

The Toronto donation drive is now upto $364.00. Going to start pushing it hard again once October rolls in, lets at least break $1000 :)

Update on the happenings

Monday, September 18th, 2006

Things have been quiet around here as I have finally settled into my new place. Suffice to say, the experience did not go very well. We finally got heat working today (11 days of cold showers). Worst of all, my beloved VoodooPC computer broke during the move. I say beloved because it as a special one - a fanless computer. Quite fantastic design - a massive heatsink of a case, and conduction lanes and heat plates on everything. It was 3 years old and showing its age, so maybe a good way to restart.

Been working on a lot of stuff that is firmly behind the scenes. But good news is in the air. Ottawa is being mapped out, and we should have iBegin Ottawa ready before next month. Once that works out well, expect Niagara Falls within 3-4 weeks, and then a US rollout soon afterwards.

Also, the donation drive is still chugging along. Someone asked me if it was a disappointment because we are not near our goal. I say hogwash to that. Every single dollar helps - so don’t forget to add some reviews when you have the time.

Site Slowdown

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

There was a bug in one of the pages which would cause the entire server to crash.

It has been fixed, the slowdowns occuring in the last week have now been fixed.

Also, don’t forget about our donation drive!
